More than 20 years of experience in conducting and leading research, analysis and providing policy advice.
New EU-funded Horizon Europe project at IMIS
Franck Duvell, jointly with Albert Kraler (lead) from Danube University Krems (UWK) and a total of 17 partners won funding for a project on “Measuring irregular migration and related policies” (MIrreM) examing estimates and statistical indicators on the irregular migrant population in Europe and the ethical implications as well as related policies, including the regularisation of irregular immigrants. The project also considers rejected asylum applications as an important pathway into irregularity and is thereby partly related to the FFVT project. It builds on previous projects Clandestino, Regine and C-Mise. Twenty countries will be covered. The project runs from 1.10.2022 – 30.9.2025. Senior Researcher, coordinator of FFVT consortium (Forced Migration and Refugee Research: Networking and Knowledge Transfer) at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), Osnabrück University. Previously, I was head of the migration department at the German Institute for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM), Berlin (2018-2020), from 2006-2018 I was Senior Researcher and in 2014 promoted to Associate Professor at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford, part-time lecturer at the University of Bremen (2004-2008), Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute (2003-4), and from 1998- 2003 I was Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. Besides, I was senior researcher at the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Vienna (2009-12), researcher for the Jonas Widgen Foundation (Netherlands), Amsterdam Economics and embedded scientist at the Turkish Directorate General for Migration Management (DGMM) (2013/14).
I am also head of the Turkey Migration Studies Network (TurkMiS), senior advisor to the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), Brussels, member of the steering committees of South East European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX), St Antony’s college, Metropolis, the Border Monitoring Projekt Ukraine, the advisory board of the Migration Research Centre at Koc University, Istanbul and the editorial boards of Migration Studies (UK), Journal for Studies in Social Justice (Canada) and the Journal for Social Politics and Sociology (Russia). I have advised or provided evidence to the EU-Commission, EU-Council, European Council, OSCE/ODIHR, IOM, UNHCR, Unicef, Austrian Government, British parliament and House of Lords, Directorate General for Migration Management in Turkey, MsF, HRW, GIZ, Pro Asyl and many more. Prior to my academic career I was a social worker with migrants and refugees and later editor of a German development policy journal. So far, I have conducted over 20 research projects, such as FFVT, CrossMigration, DIEM, MedMig, Eumagine and Clandestino. I also addressed over a hundred conferences and provided 16 keynotes, for example, at Metropolis, IMISCOE and EMN. Finally, I have published 10 books, around 50 journal articles and over 35 book chapters.
